Pharmacology

Pharmacology is derived from the Greek word meaning drug and is the branch of medicine involving the study of drug action in the human body. Substances with medicinal values are considered pharmaceuticals. Pharmacology is related to pharmaceuticals as it is the study of interactions between these chemicals and living organisms. It is important to understand pharmacology’s far different from pharmacy. Pharmacy refers to a profession involving the preparation and dispensing of pharmaceuticals while pharmacology is the study of the drugs dispensed and how they interact with the human body. In the field, there are two different area: pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. While there have been significant advances in the field of pharmacology, the need for this type of study has never been greater.

Pharmacodynamics are studies of what a drug does to the living body. It involves the physiological effects on both the living body and parasites or living organisms the substance was developed to destroy or fight. Most drugs are created to mimic normal physiological processes or inhibit vital processes of microbial processes. Drugs act in one of the following ways: stimulating, depressing, destroying cells, irritation, or replacing. Scientists will study the interaction and acts to monitor desired and undesired effects for the best outcome during studies and clinical trials and product development.

Pharmacokinetics studies drug interaction in the opposite way. While Pharmacodynamics studies what a drug does to the body, Pharmacokinetics studies what the body does to the drug. Mechanisms of absorption, the rate it takes a drug to act and how long the effect lasts, and chemical changes of the drug in the body are all administered in this type of pharmacology. This study is also broken up into several different areas of study including: liberation, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. The absorption rate studies is extremely important in diagnosing the proper amount of a drug and how often to take the drug.

Pharmacologists must have in-dept training and education and passion for biology and chemistry. Experimentation and all branches of pharmacology are extremely important in today’s society. With the growing demand for pharmaceuticals and the impact of the industry in the nation, pharmacology keeps the population healthy.
